Aaaah, les joies de la baignade alors que l'été revient, Wonder s'en donne à coeur joie ! Mais c'est le seul à nager spontanément, les autres trempent à peine les pattes... Yeeaaah, that's so good to swim as the summer heat is coming back, Wonder is having so much fun ! But he's the only one to go swimming by himself, the others barely enter the water...

Mi-octobre, j'ai eu Lilou et Bimbo en pension car elles étaient en chaleurs et leurs proprios souhaitaient les faire reproduire avec Kiway (le veinard : 2 en même temps !). En attendant le bon moment, Lilou s'est éclatée avec Lucky et Cristal en jouant à la bagarre ! Sur la fin, Lucky commençait à être très intéressé par Lilou, j'ai donc cessé leurs jeux enfantins et est laissé Kiway et Lilou ensemble en permanence afin qu'ils se concentrent sur le sujet brûlant... Seulement c'était leur première fois à tous les deux et j'étais un peu inquiète en voyant leurs ébats maladroits ! Kiway étaient très intéressé mais Lilou s'affaissait sous lui sans tenir la position adéquate, puis un matin Kiway laissa complètement tomber : donc soit il a enfin réussi à la saillir, soit il a loupé le coche... Puis ça a été au tour de Bimbo qui elle refusait catégoriquement de se laisser chevaucher : étant très dominante et Kiway plutôt soumis, c'était carrément compromis, on a donc eu recours à l'insémination artificielle pour assurer le coup... Un mois plus tard, Bimbo était bien gestante, mais Lilou non, ce sera donc pour la prochiane fois... En attendant une naissance est prévue pour Noël à Motor Pool (chez Bimbo) ! Quant à Wonder et Rumba, ils se reposent...

Mid-october I had both Lilou and Bimbo on board at home as they were on season and their owners wished to breed them with Kiway (what a lucky guy : 2 girls at once !). Waiting for the right time, I put Lilou with Lucky and Cristal and they had so much fun playing fight ! At the end, Lucky was quite interested with Lilou, so I ended their play and let Kiway and Lilou together alone for good so that they concentrate on the hot topic... However, it was both their first time and I went worrying when watching their awkward moves ! Kiway was very interested but Lilou just let her fall under Kiway, not keeping the right stand, then one morning Kiway just gave up : so either he finally managed to mate her, or he just missed the game... Then it was Bimbo's turn who strictly refused to let Kiway mount her : being very dominant and Kiway rather submissive, it was quite a shame, so we had to help with Artificial Insemination... One month later, Bimbo was confirmed pregnant but not Lilou, that will be next time for her...But one whelping is due for Christmas at Motor Pool (at Bimbo's home) ! As for Wonder and Rumba, they are resting...

Entre temps à Tontouta, Patsy a surpris tout le monde en donnant naissance à un chiot unique inattendu de Buck : même les véto ne l'avaient pas vu lors des contrôles par échographie à 4 et 5 semaines après la saillie ! Elle est née avec une semaine de retard et elle est énorme : plus de 600 g à la naissance !!! Et elle est magnifique : un parfait mélange de ses parents, fauve bringé comme un tigre avec de belles panachures blanches ! La première petite-fille de Wonder... In the meantime at Tontouta, Patsy surprised everyone by giving birth to an unexpected only pup by Buck : even the vets didn't see it when they ultrasounded Patsy at 4 and 5 weeks after the mating ! The pup was born one week late and she's enormous : over 600 g at birth !!! And she's stunning : a perfect blend of her parents, fawn brindle like a tiger with gorgeous white markings ! She's Wonder's first grand-child...

Le syndrome du "chiot nageur", c'est ce qui arrive à la fille de Patsy et Buck : à 3 semaines elle ne marche toujours pas et a le sternum plat (cage thoracique aplatie), ce qui a pour conséquence de placer ses antérieurs en équerre et on dirait qu'elle nage la brasse sur le sol ! Ce syndrome, relativement rare, peut frapper toutes les races, certains pensent que c'est génétique, d'autres neurologique, ou encore que c'est un problème de croissance, quoiqu'il en soit c'est chaque fois en cas de surpoids du chiot lors de sa première semaine : portée de moins de 3 chiots avec une mère qui a plein de lait, résultat le chiot est trop lourd ce qui a pour conséquence de déformer sa cage thoracique qui s'aplatit, personnellement je pense donc que ce n'est qu'une déformation tout à fait rattrapable. En général le chiot a des difficultés à respirer et à se déplacer et décède avant sa 3e semaine, mais certains survivent et c'est à cet âge qu'on s'aperçoit de leur handicap... 

Pour aider ses chiots à grandir dans le bon sens et redevenir normaux, il faut faire en sorte qu'ils puissent se lever et tenir sur leurs pattes pour enlever leur poids de leur thorax pour qu'il se reforme normalement, il faut donc leur mettre des attelles, bandages ou autres systèmes pour les aider à se tenir debout ainsi qu'un sol anti-dérapant pour ne pas qu'ils glissent (en effet leur thorax aplatit a pour effet d'écarter leurs antérieurs qui ont tendance à glisser latéralement, les empèchant de tenir debout). Le cas de "Cybelle" (c'est le nom de la fille de Patsy et Buck) ne me parait pas trop grave car elle arrive à se lever toute seule, bien qu'avec difficultés, mais ne tient pas longtemps car ses antérieurs glissent sur le côté, j'ai donc conseillé à ses éleveurs de mettre des tapis sur le carrelage pour ne plus qu'elle glisse et je lui ai bandé les antérieurs pour les maintenir dans le bon axe afin qu'elle puisse prendre appui dessus. Elle n'a que 3 semaines et est "si belle" qu'on espère pouvoir la sauver de ce syndrome dans les semaines à venir... 

The "swimming puppy" syndrom, that's what's happening to Patsy and Buck's daughter : at 3 week-old she's still not walking and has a flat chest, which places her front legs on the side and she looks like she's swimming when trying to get up ! This syndrome seldom strikes but can hit any breed, some people think it's genetic, other neurological, or a growth issue, either way it's always when the pups are overweighted their first week : a litter of less than 3 pups and a mother with plenty of milk, hence the pups are too heavy which consequently put extra pressure on their ribcage that flattens, personally I think this condition is only a growth issue we can fix. Usually the pups have breathing issues and difficulties to move around and die before their third week, but some do survive and it's around that age we discover their condition... 

To help these pups grow back to normal, we have to make them stand and walk properly to relieve their weight from their ribcage so that it can grow round again, so we can put on tapes or other devices to help them stand on a non-slipping carpet so they can hold a grip of the ground (because their flatten chest pushes apart their front legs which tend to slip laterally, preventing the pup from standing up). About "Cybelle" (Patsy and Buck's daughter) I think her case isn't that bad because she does manage to stand up by herself, with some difficulties though, but cannot stand up too long as her front legs quickly slip apart, so I advised her breeders to put carpets on that slipping floor so she cannot slip that easily and I taped her front legs to maintain them in the right position to keep standing. She's only 3 week-old and is "so pretty" (that's what "Cybelle" means !) that we do hope we can save her from that syndrom in a couple of weeks... 

Un mois plus tard, Cybelle est belle et bien sortie d'affaire : elle marche et court comme n'importe quel chiot normal et n'a plus aucun signe de thorax plat ! C'est une véritable petite merveille et un sacré cadeau de Noël pour moi ! La première petite-fille de Wonder va donc rester avec moi...

One month later, Cybelle is sound and healthy : she's walking and running like any normal pup and there no sign of flat chest left ! She a real beauty and such a great Christmas gift for me ! Wonder's first grand-child is now staying with me...
